There are many benefits afforded to those with a press pass, press card or press membership. They can provide access to people and places that a regular civilian may not typically be allowed access to. For this reason, they can be very desirable to have; some members of the media even seek to obtain multiple press credentials to best fulfill their job functions.

The purpose of press passes, cards, and memberships are to identify a person as someone working in the journalism field. They may be issued to writers, reporters, photographers, editors or anyone else deemed necessary working in the press field. Holding a press card or press card can be advantageous to those working in the field. Press memberships and passes can be issued by several different organizations, not just the newspaper or media outlet that the person works for. In addition to newspapers and other media outlets, a press credential may be issued by other organizations such as law enforcement agencies, colleges, schools, universities, private organizations and their event organizers- especially ones that frequently host press conferences or other such events- and even the government. In fact, a press pass, press card, or press membership can even have a legal status attached to it. Meaning that such a pass affords a journalist specific inalienable legal rights.
